What is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is based upon the body’s innate ability to heal itself, also known as the vital force, the vis, or the qi. Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care profession that emphasizes prevention and optimal health. It encompasses the latest modern science and research as well as traditional and empirical methods passed down through the ages.
Naturopathic doctors utilize therapeutic methods that encourage the self-healing process of the body. Methods and modalities of treatment are selected based on the six naturopathic principles as they apply to the individual needs of each patient.
Conditions Treated with Naturopathic Medicine
During undergrad I worked at a pharmacy because I was wanted to be a pharmaceutical researcher. During my time there, I began to see patterns in the patients that deeply disturbed me.
I saw the same children return month after month for antibiotics because they kept getting sick. I saw senior citizens on upwards of 10 to 13 different medications because the first prescription they took created other illnesses that they needed more prescriptions for. There were also drug seekers going from pharmacy to pharmacy. This craziness made me realize that I did not want to contribute to the madness.
I knew there had to be a better way. Then I discovered naturopathic medicine.
